Carole Hollowell Interiors
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
A native of Edenton, North Carolina, Carole Hollowell grew up surrounded by beauty. The elegant historic architecture of her home town greatly influenced her love of antiques, art, exquisite fabrics as well as the importance of family and traditions. This upbringing also shaped her idea of what it means to live a well-lived life and how she could help others achieve that dream. Carole believes, “At its essence a home should be functional, beautiful and comfortable,” which is how she approaches working with clients.
Carole received a BS in Interior Design in 1992 from Meredith College and immediately began honing her design skills as a store and showroom designer for a major residential furniture manufacturer. Her extensive travel throughout the United States gave her the opportunity to design casual, contemporary, and traditional spaces.
Carole Hollowell Interiors was formed in 1999 and has served clients on a wide range of projects solidifying over twenty years of experience in high-end residential design and construction. She is also a seasoned veteran inside the furniture industry. Her tailored approach to each client’s specific needs and her comprehensive design process deliver a seamless progression from concept to reality. She combines her design expertise, product knowledge, and access to exclusive trade accounts to create classic, yet unique spaces.
How would you describe your design style?
Classic. Tailored. Inspired.
I mix classic traditional style with clean lines and unexpected pieces, creating timeless unique designs. Our goal at Carole Hollowell Interiors is to create homes that are functional and beautiful! We know that clients have entrusted us to enhance their lives with comfort and style.
You recently designed two rooms with our Crown Bed! Can you walk us through the design process of each room?
Our client’s daughter is passionate about theatre and dance. We knew that a dramatic room, much like a theatrical stage, was a must! The ballet pink Crown Bed was a nod to her love of dance. The addition of a custom matching pink monogrammed pillow added an extra touch of personalization. She also had a beautiful backdrop for her virtual college classes and Zoom meeting with our wallcovering selection!
The design for this bedroom needed to serve a dual purpose. It is primarily a masculine, tailored space for our client’s son, but on occasion also delivers a level of sophistication when it serves as a guest room. Coley Home’s Crown Bed paired with The Bedding Bundle anchored the room design. We added a pop of color with the orange pillow as a nod to the son’s high school, Woodberry Forest.
In addition to residential design, you also beautifully transform sorority houses! How do you approach your sorority house projects differently than your typical residential project?
My approach to sorority houses is to design spaces that feel like an upscale boutique hotel. I want the house to feel warm and residential, all the while making sure the fabric and finish selections wear well and survive the activity that comes with collegiate women coming and going. I create beautiful, comfortable yet functional spaces that feel like home for the sisters and alumnae and can serve as a dynamic recruiting tool to attract new members.
What is your very favorite room to design, and why?
My favorite room to design is a bedroom! I always design for that specific individual and create a room that reflects his or her unique personality.
If a client is on a strict budget, what are your favorite cost-effective ways to add a big impact?
Paint! Selecting the right paint color always creates a mood in the room and has a huge impact on the space.
