Based in Nashville, TN, April Tomlin designs the most beautiful, serene spaces. We love her moody, yet inviting style and ability to incorporate and layer texture. Read the blog to learn all about April and how she styled her Coley Home piece.
I didn’t grow up in a house like the ones I design. My mom, a hardworking single parent, was more concerned with putting a roof over our heads than she was with how our house looked, but even back then, I can remember rearranging our furniture and finding art to hang on walls - anything to make the house feel more homey. At my core, I have always believed that everyone can achieve this feeling, no matter what house they have.
I took this passion and turned it into a career when I became, and continue to be, a student of design, construction and architecture. I ultimately started my own design firm in Nashville, and over the years, I have learned a lot about myself and my place in design. I know there is more to creating a home than simply making construction decisions and furniture selections.
I aim to enhance both people’s homes and their lives through my work, and I have been lucky enough to do that for so many amazing clients throughout my 14 years in the industry. To me, the essence of an April Tomlin Interiors home encompasses my welcoming, laid back, and creative way of living, and I hope to recreate this feeling in every home I touch, just like I’ve been doing since I was a kid.
Historically, our firm has been known for an extremely texturized look and feel, a neutral palette, the frequent use of wood, and adding elements that evoke interest with wallpapers, lighting, unexpected materials, and a mix of eclectic and modern art.
Lately, I have evolved into a lover of more classic design (never abandoning my signature edgy moments though). Whether it be because I am building my own home in a rural area outside of Nashville, that I am simply aging and changing as I raise my family, or that the chaos of the world calls us all back to a more simple way of living…whatever it is, I know that I like and absorb more classic architecture and design these days and have started incorporating that into my work.
We have used this exact bed style in another design project, so I knew I wanted it for my girls. When it came to picking the color, I chose coloring that best complemented the art I’d been collecting for the gallery walls that would become the backdrops for their beds. Luckily, I landed on a pink, and since they’ve been asking me for pink beds for years, they were thrilled.

ART. While it doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive, I do encourage anyone interested in improving their home to start collecting significant and meaningful pieces of art. Art can bring so much warmth and uniqueness to a home if selected well. I have taken my own advice (just like in my girls’ room), and I now have a curated collection of art that is not only special but makes an impressive design statement in my home.
When it comes to clients, I encourage them to concentrate their budgets on the most experienced spaces of the home like the living room and kitchen. Investing in high quality design elements and furnishings in these spaces really saves money in the long run because there is longevity in good design and furniture (and, of course, these are the areas that guests actually see and use). On the other hand, I tell them not to spend all their money on spaces that will likely need to change throughout their years in the home like kids’ rooms and playrooms.
I like the kitchen because it is the most used space in the home and can have as few or as many materials as you want. There is lots of room for creativity.
For inspiration, I like to explore digitally, especially while I have young kids and am not able to travel the globe. I usually find myself somewhere in Europe when I do. When I do get to travel, I take so many photos of buildings, the insides of restaurants and anything that feels different than the area where I live and mainly design
Anywhere I haven’t been in Europe yet…
I am currently reading the book of Romans from the Bible as well as The Anxious Generation because I am raising two girls in a fast-paced, ‘latest is greatest’ kind of world.
