Meet Katy and Gracen! They are the dynamic sister duo behind Sorella Glenn, a company that hand pleats bespoke lampshades right here in the US. The company’s collection of beautiful colors and patterns is the perfect way to brighten up your space. Read on to learn all about Katy and Gracen!
Tell us about yourselves!
We grew up among antiques and classic styles. Our mother was an antiques dealer, our father was an engineer, and both had an eye for proportion and harmony. As such, we have always been involved in something creative.
Katy lives in Greenville, SC and has one son who is a student at Clemson. Gracen lives in Haverford, PA and has a son and daughter in middle school.
We love your lampshades! What was the main inspiration for creating a business around them?
Gracen, an interior decorator, frequently needed colorful, bespoke shades. Traditionally, designers had to source fabric (easy) and a lampshade maker (not easy). We founded Sorella Glenn with signature patterns to redefine the traditional lampshade and make them easily available to designers and consumers. Six months later, we launched our custom linen shade program. Customers choose the silhouette, shade color, pleat style, and trim color. Now everyone has access to beautiful, handmade shades!
Y’all are masters at mixing patterns! Any tips for creating a cohesive look while using multiple prints?
Using colorful lampshades is similar to using throw pillows. Think of it as adding an extra pattern or subtle color to your design scheme. Making lampshades part of the design… not an afterthought!
How would you describe each of your design styles?
Katy’s core furnishings lean toward neutral and traditional. She is an artist, so she uses her silk paintings to bring bright color and complexity to her home.
Gracen loves the juxtaposition of modern and traditional together. She has a huge canvas mural by Paul Santoleri in the same room with antiques and 1700’s family portraits. She also loves modern colorful rugs!
What are your main sources of design inspiration?
A common answer – but travel, definitely! Architecture, pattern, the colors of the sea, restaurant and hotel design all influence our palettes and interiors. We are, however, most inspired by other artists and designs. We love the thrill of finding an object that’s just really cool, or a new pattern from a fabric house. We wish we could make shades in every fabric!!
You recently designed a bedroom with a Charlotte Crown Bed! Can you walk us through the design process?
When Gracen moved into her current home, the master bedroom came with drapes in a gorgeous fabric that needed to be saved. While not the right aesthetic for the adults, the fabric was perfect for her son’s room. The yardage was reworked into roman shades and big euro shams for the bed. Her son wanted a soft, comfortable headboard, and Gracen searched for an upholstered bed that was not too modern. She didn’t want to spend the money on a completely custom bed, so it alluded her for a while.
Then… she found Coley. The Kelly Green fabric was perfect with the shams, and the platform bed had skinny feet (which is a hang up of Gracen’s – no fat square feet for her!). So it seemed like a home run. The classic West Elm Lourdes Sanchez bullseye rug pulls it all together. As a surprise present for her son, Thomas, they had the bed delivered for Christmas. He was psyched to see such huge boxes under the tree! And Gracen was psyched at how easy it was to put together by herself – no husband needed! Best of all, Thomas loves it!
